Characterizing Dispersion Effectiveness at Varying Salinities

چکیده

ABSTRACT Chemical dispersant formulations typically provide maximum oil dispersion in waters between 30–40 ppt (parts per thousand) salt content, which encompasses typical ocean salinity (~34 ppt). As a result, most laboratory studies of effectiveness (DE) are conducted at low to average salinity. Ocean can vary locally from below 20 during ice and snow melt, extremely high (over 100 ppt) freeze up periods or within natural brine pools deeper waters. In this study, the influence on DE was evaluated using baffled flask test (BFT) dispersant-to-oil ratio (DOR) 1:25. Benchtop experiments were with Alaskan North Slope (ANS) crude presence absence chemical 5 25°C varying salinities (0.2 125 addition as determined by BFT, droplet size distribution (DSD) fluorescence intensity measured via LISST-100X particle analyzer (Sequoia Scientific, Inc., Bellevue, WA) ECO fluorometer (Sea Bird - WET Labs, Inc.; Philomath, OR), respectively. Results indicate that dispersant, occurred 25ppt, decreases above Concentration small droplets (<10 μm) twice 35ppt than other 25°C. Survival of Vibrio anguillarum and Vibrio salmonicida at different salinities.

The fish pathogenic bacteria Vibrio anguillarum and V. salmonicida showed the capacity to survive for more than 50 and 14 months, respectively, in seawater microcosms. A salinity of 5% proved lethal to V. anguillarum harvested in the late-exponential growth phase, whereas a salinity of 9% was lethal to the bacterium after it had been starved at a salinity of 30% for 67 days. The lethal salinity...

Dispersion-managed solitons at normal average dispersion.

We find that in a dispersion-managed fiber, in which the strength of the dispersion management is above some threshold, solitons can exist with normal average dispersion. When the normal average dispersion is below some limiting value there exist two soliton solutions with the same pulse duration and different pulse energies. When the normal average dispersion is above this limiting value, no s...

Characterizing the Variability of Arrival Processes with Indexes of Dispersion

We propose to characterize the burstiness of packet arrival processes with indices of dispersion for intervals and for counts. These indices, which are functions of the variance of intervals and counts, are relatively straightforward to estimate and convey much more information than simpler indices, such as the coefficient of variation, that are often used to describe burstiness quantitatively....

Phase Complexity Surfaces: Characterizing Time-Varying Program Behavior

It is well known that a program execution exhibits time-varying behavior, i.e., a program typically goes through a number of phases during its execution with each phase exhibiting relatively homogeneous behavior within a phase and distinct behavior across phases. In fact, several recent research studies have been exploiting this time-varying behavior for various purposes. This paper proposes ph...
